Study tour to Kitale Maize Co-operative
On 19.th of December 2014 Wefoco organized its members a study tour to the Kitale Maize Co-operative. The main purpose of the trip was to introduce women the nature of a co-operative and benefits they receive from co-operation. Women were educated on responsibilities and rights associated with membership of a co-operative. Representatives of the maize co-operative showed women their storage which have necessary conditions to preserve member’s maize. Having this kind of storage allows farmers to sell their maize after harvesting season when they can get higher price. Women also saw how the co-operative processes and packs its members maize. Adding value to maize gives the co-operative a competitive advantage and increases the incomes. The study trip was to motivate women on establishing their own co-operative in Shianda, which registration is now in process. Women are about to have another study trip to Siaya multipurpose co-operative.
